Compare and contrast the approaches taken by the three major sociological paradigms (i. e., functionalism, conflict theory, and interactionism) in their explanation of the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination.

From a functionalist perspective, racial prejudice and discrimination occur in society to serve an important social function. While this view is obviously contentious and not accepted by many, it claims that racial discrimination serves the positive function of creating a close bond and solidarity within different racial groups in a society. For instance, Chinese immigrants in the United States keep a close bond to other Chinese immigrants. This enables them to be constantly in touch with their racial identity along with its customs and traditions. 

On the other hand, the conflict theory states that racial prejudice and discrimination occur in society when there is a conflict between the dominant race ("whites" in Western societies) and racial minorities (Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, etc.). From this perspective, racial minorities are discriminated against mainly when dominant races (Whites) perceive them as threats. 

Lastly, from an interactionism perspective, racial prejudice and discrimination occur when dominant and privileged members of society interact with each other and form collective views of racial minorities. According to this perspective, racism is not directly related to race per se, but rather the interactions between dominant members of society.
