Universal helplessness occurs when  certain individuals are overwhelmed in a sense of helplessness to the point where they think that anything they do to address the problems that they have wouldn't give any positive results. So they choose to give up and wallow in their misery.

This tend to be caused if those people have an overwhelmingly low self-esteem. They constantly think that cannot do anything meaningful and no-one in this world care about them enough to offers help to them. Making them feel small and alone.
