Who shape how judaism was practiced for the next several centuries?

I believe the answer  is: Rabbis.
They have palyed an important rule in shaping how judaism is practiced ever since the roman banned the practice from their territory.
Rabbis usually devoted their life to learnt  both Judaism's written and oral laws from old texts.
