The role of punishment is controversial. Although punishment can end bad behavior quickly, some psychologists believe that it has negative long term consequences. The arguments against the use of punishment are that it does not teach appropriate positive behavior, it tends to work only if it is delivered right after the behavior, it may be imitated as a way of dealing with problems and it creates anger and hostility. Would you use any form of punishment in raising a child? If not, how would you eliminate unwanted behavior?
