Tango as a dance originated in the port of Buenos Aires and rapidly spread through the southern region. It growth was paralleled with the Argentine society, formed by European immigrants, who contributed with many of its elements.  In its beginnings it was danced in brothels or among the popular class of society.  

In its origins, Tango did not exist properly as a dance, it was rather a mixture enriched with musical influences from the Austrian waltz, pasodoble from Andalusia, zarzuela, Scottish dances, Cuban habaneras, milonga and polka, among others.

Tango as music was played mainly by flute, violin and guitar; then the bandoneon (of German origin) was incorporated and replaced the flute.

It was not accepted by society because it was considered a provocative dance. However, by the 1910s it began to be accepted and is now considered a fundamental part of Argentine culture.
