AFL primary goal: to drive the Knights from the industrial field, and, thanks largely to the Knights' own confusion and to employers' counterattacks, this was speedily accomplished.

Their main goal:   was end child labor and convict labor. Also, another goal of theirs was to vision a society in which workers, no capitalists, would own the industries in which they labored.

Membership requirements:  Most earlier unions restricted membership to skilled laborers (those with specialized training in a craft) and to white men. Led by Terence V. Powderly, the Knights welcomed unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled workers into their ranks. Immigrants, African Americans and women were also welcome as members.
