Serving in the Military
We all have professions that we are interested in that may not work out in reality. Perhaps you dream of becoming the President of the United States but you weren’t born in the United States, so you do not meet the requirements. Or, if your eyesight is not perfect, your hope of becoming a professional pilot may simply be out of reach. But these days, professions are not supposed to discriminate against potential job applicants based on race, gender, religion, or disability. Let’s meet a Deaf person who really wants to join the military but is finding it difficult. Watch the video about a Deaf man telling about his quest to join the profession of his dreams and then answer the questions.

Deaf in the Military
Imagine you are in a military unit with a Deaf soldier. There are many situations where audible orders will be given. How might you help your Deaf fellow soldier know about these orders?
What problems might arise if a Deaf soldier was in a battle situation where weapons were being fired?
Would a Deaf soldier endanger the safety of their whole unit? Explain your answer.
Do you think that deafness should disqualify a person from serving in the military? Explain your answer.
Deafness is a sensory difference, as is blindness. Do you think a blind person could serve in the military? What different types of problems might come up?
