Help Sally watched the landscape change outside the window. Lush, green fields became rocky hills as the train climbed higher. They rattled over a bridge that made her want to shut her eyes. The river was a long way below. They passed many farms as they approached the town. Sally couldn't believe how green everything was. "Now arriving in Sacramento!" called the conductor as the train pulled into the station. The girls grabbed their suitcases and joined the rush of people getting off the train.

"Sally! Beth!" A familiar voice shouted their names. Sally turned to see her father striding down the platform toward them. He grinned as he scooped them both into a huge hug. "I've missed you so much," he said.

They walked out of the station together into a street bustling with activity. They walked past storefronts and pushed through crowds of people. At the corner store, their father bought them each a cup of ice cream. Sally had never tasted anything so good.

They walked for another few blocks and turned onto a side street lined with big houses. They stopped in front of a house painted the color of a summer sky.

"Welcome home," said their father. Sally and Beth ran around the back of the house. Standing on the back porch, they could see the sea meeting the horizon.

"It's beautiful here," whispered Beth. Sally nodded.

"I think we're going to like California," she said with a grin.
