I think your answer is A., plural subjects and masculine and feminine pronouns. Both C. and D. can't be it, since they favor the use of one gendered pronoun instead of both types. For B., I've never heard of a "general subject" in the case of singular and plural subjects, so I believe this was put here to throw you off by assuming that "general" would refer to all subjects, or something like that.

Using plural subjects rather than singular would refer to more than one person or subject (specifically more than one gender, in this case).
