Cranial nerve VIII (8) or the vestibulocochlear nerve is responsible for the sense of balance and 3-D orientation with reference to gravity. The vestibular nerve originates from the inner ear, specifically the vestibular labyrinth containing the vestibular hair cells and otoliths. With the help of  the ears (vestibular input), eyes (visual input), and musculoskeletal system (proprioceptive input), the body is able to detect the slightest movement and acceleration, letting the brain interpret it via the temporal lobe.
