In anticipation of an ice storm, many states in the North spread salt on their roadways to keep the roads from icing. Explain the rationalization for this practice.

The colligative properties may be defined as the different properties that does not depend on the type of solute. The concentration of solute is considered while studying the colligative properties.

The salt acts as anti freezing that clears the ice from the area. Salt decreases the melting point of ice and makes the ice solution diluted and ice starts melts when comes in contact with the salt. This changes the ice into the liquid state of the water.
