When an acid or a base is added to a buffer, a double-displacement reaction will occur. The acid or base will be neutralized, forming a neutral salt or water plus the conjugate of the buffer. For example, if the base NaOH is added to a buffer containing HCN and NaCN, the base will react with the acid HCN as shown: NaOH(aq)+HCN(aq)?NaCN(aq)+H2O(l)
Complete the following chemical equations to show what happens when HBr or KOH is added to a buffer solution made from HF and KF. Part B Identify the reaction that occurs when the acid HBr is added to the buffer solution. Drag each label to the appropriate target.
HF (aq) + KBr (aq)
H2O (l) + KBr (aq)
HBr (aq) + KF (aq)
HF (aq) + KF (aq)
H2O (l) + KF (aq)
HF (aq) + HBr
BUFFER SOLUTION: HF (aq) and KF (aq)
