Why does a reaction stop when the limiting reactant is consumed, even though there may be plenty of the other reactants present?

For a reaction to occur all the reactants are required. If no supply of one of the reactants the reaction must stop because there ain't any more of it to keep reacting. When one of the reactants is in low supply or runs out it is called the limiting reactant.
