Hospital pharmacies and drug manufactures have various gelatin capsules that they can put drugs into, which will only dissolve in acidic or basic media, once they pass the mouth. This will be done to control where the drug will be introduced into the human digestive tract. [We do not want things dissolving in the mouth or oral cavity] Additionally, most drugs will have several different functional groups in their structure, or we can consider them polyfunctional group molecules. With that said, please answer the following questions in order: a. Where will a capsule designed to dissolve in acid dissolve in the human digestive tract, if this capsule is swallowed?
b. What will happen (if anything) to a part of the drug molecule that is a secondary amine, once the capsule dissolves? (Consider what will happen to it in the same location in the digestive tract where the capsule dissolves.)
c. What will happen (if anything) to a part of the drug molecule that is a carboxylic acid, once the capsule dissolves? (Consider what will happen to it in the same location in the digestive tract where the capsule dissolves.)
d. What will happen (if anything) to a part of the drug molecule that is an ester, once the capsule dissolves? (Consider what will happen to it in the same location in the digestive tract where the capsule dissolves.)
e. What will happen (if anything) to a part of the drug molecule that is a ketone, once the capsule dissolves?
