The primary structure of a protein is the distinct sequence of amino acids in each polypeptide chain that makes up the protein. This is essentially simply a sequence of which amino acids exist in which order in a polypeptide chain, not a structure. However, since the final protein structure is essentially dependent on this sequence, this is called the polypeptide chain's primary structure.
