Light from the sun (solar radiation) is composed on numerous wavelengths. The Earth's atmosphere filters out (or absorbs) some of these wavelengths; however, light in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet (UV) spectral ranges does reach the surface. Similarly, glass absorbs certain wavelengths of light. Some of the infrared and UV light cannot penetrate through even a thin sheet of glass.
A solar cooker is a well-insulated box with a reflective lid that direct solar radiation into the box. Some solar ovens have a glass cover to keep debris from getting inside the oven and contaminating food. Solar radiation from the reflector is directed through the glass onto the pots containing food.
Which wavelengths of solar radiation will cause the temperature inside the solar oven to increase?
A
ultraviolet light from 280 nm to 315 nm
B
ultraviolet light from 315 nm to 400 nm
C
visible light from 400 nm to 780 nm
D
infrared light from 700 nm to 3,000 nm
