Fish and wildlife managers have determined that a sudden temperature increase greater than 5°c would be harmful to the marine ecosystem of a river. warmer waters contain less dissolved oxygen and cause organisms in a river to increase their metabolism; if the temperature increase is sudden, the organisms do not have time to adapt to the new environment and likely will die. (changes in river temperatures of five degrees and more due to seasonal temperature variations are common, but those temperature change are gradual.)

a proposed chemical plant plans to use river water for process cooling. the river flows at a rate of 15.0 m3/s at a temperature of 15°c, and a fraction of it will be diverted to the plant.

preliminary calculations reveal that the cooling water will remove 5.00×105kj/s of heat from the plant. a portion of the extracted water will evaporate from the plant into the atmosphere, and the remainder will be returned to the river at a temperature of 35°c.

(a) draw and completely label a flowchart of the process and prove there is enough information available to calculate all of the unknown stream flow rates on the chart.

(b) estimate the fraction of the river flow that must be diverted to the plant and the percentage of the cooling water that evaporates. assume that water has a constant heat capacity of 4.19 kj/(kg°c) and a heat of vaporization roughly that of water at normal boiling point, and also assume that the specific enthalpy of the water vapor relative to liquid water at 15°c equals the heat of vaporization.

(c)write (but don’t evaluate) an expression for the enthalpy change neglected by the assumption about the specific enthalpy of the steam.

Amass of m 1.5 kg of steam is contained in a closed rigid container. initially the pressure and temperature of the steam are: p 1.5 mpa and t 240°c (superheated state), respectively. then the temperature drops to t2= 100°c as the result of heat transfer to the surroundings. determine: a) quality of the steam at the end of the process, b) heat transfer with the surroundings. for: p1.5 mpa and t 240°c: enthalpy of superheated vapour is 2900 kj/kg, specific volume of superheated vapour is 0. 1483 m/kg, while for t 100°c: enthalpy of saturated liquid water is 419kj/kg, specific volume of saturated liquid water is 0.001043m/kg, enthalpy of saturated vapour is 2676 kj/kg, specific volume of saturated vapour is 1.672 m/kg and pressure is 0.1 mpa.

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?
