The existing Fell City wastewater treatment plant has a complete mix activated sludge biological reactor following a primary settling tank. A local company proposes to build a candy factory and to send its wastewater to the Fell City plant. The factory’s BOD is substantial but it is all dissolved, so the proposal is to pipe it directly to the biological reactor. Over the next five years, the city flow is expected to grow to 9800 m3/d (the 2025 flow). The existing reactor has a volume of 12,000 m3. Given the following information, determine the maximum flow that the wastewater plant can accept from the factory (in 2025) and still produce an effluent BOD of 25 mg/L.

City raw wastewater BOD = 200 mg/L

Factory BOD = 850 mg/L

Degradation reaction coefficient for BOD = 8.4/d

(This is not the coefficient to convert between BOD5 and BODu.)

Amass of m 1.5 kg of steam is contained in a closed rigid container. initially the pressure and temperature of the steam are: p 1.5 mpa and t 240°c (superheated state), respectively. then the temperature drops to t2= 100°c as the result of heat transfer to the surroundings. determine: a) quality of the steam at the end of the process, b) heat transfer with the surroundings. for: p1.5 mpa and t 240°c: enthalpy of superheated vapour is 2900 kj/kg, specific volume of superheated vapour is 0. 1483 m/kg, while for t 100°c: enthalpy of saturated liquid water is 419kj/kg, specific volume of saturated liquid water is 0.001043m/kg, enthalpy of saturated vapour is 2676 kj/kg, specific volume of saturated vapour is 1.672 m/kg and pressure is 0.1 mpa.

Atank with constant volume contains 2.27 kg of a mixture of water phases (liquid-vapor). in the initial state the temperature and the quality are 127 °c and 0.6, respectively. the mixture is heated until the temperature of 160 oc is reached. illustrate the process in a t-v diagram. then, determine (1) the mass of the vapor in kg at the initial state, (2) the final pressure in kpa.
