Walt Whitman was born on May 31st 1819 in West Hills, New York, the second son of Walter Whitman, a housebuilder, and Louisa Van Velsor. He and his eight brothers lived in Brooklyn and Long Island in the 1820s and 1830s.

The first job that Whitman had was as a printer in New York City. In 1836, at the age of seventeen, he began his career as teacher in Long Island. He continued to teach until 1841. It was then when he came across with the work of  Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and the Bible.
