Personification is the a giving of human or living attributes to inanimate objects. It enables the lifeless characters/ ideas seem to have a life of their own, having an identity and feelings of their own.

Sylvia Plath's poem "Edge" also uses this literary technique when she wrote-

"Feet seem to be saying: We have come so far, it is over".

Here, the feet refers to the feet of the "perfected" woman. Feet on their own have no movement or life. And so, when she gives a voice to them with the use of words such as "saying" or "we", she is personifying them and giving them human attributes.
