Read It! The pit viper is a type of snake. A pit viper has a pit between each eye and nostril. These pits, called pit holes,
sense heat. This enables the snake to hunt in total darkness. The snake can sense a warm-blooded animal
nearby. The snake's brain receives the information from the pit holes. This information is converted into
knowledge the snake can use, such as the size and shape of the animal. A viper's pits let it sense small mammals
up to three feet (one meter) away. The snake can also tell if there is something nearby that would like to eat it.
