[Which is the main idea of paragraph 7] (1) Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls was made for great reading. (2) First of all, I love dogs, so I could really identify with the main character. (3) He loved his two dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, very much. (4) I love my dog. (5) I knew how Billy felt when the dogs died. (6) The book is mostly about how Billy saves his money to buy the dogs and how they wins prize money for him. (7) I found it interesting to read about how poor Billies' family was, and I learned a lot about the Great Depression.

(8) Billy worked hard and saved his money in a K. C. baking powder can. (9) He saved until he had enough to pay for the dogs he wanted. (10) He named the puppys Dan and Ann because he saw those names carved inside a heart, on a tree. (11) That showed that he loved them and that they loved each other.

(12) All of the hunting Billy did with his pups taught me another thing I had not known about: hunting raccoons. (13) They used to be a very popular animal to hunt, mostly for its fur. (14) The dogs Billy owned succeded at chasing and outsmarting the raccoons. (15) What they would do was to "tree" a raccoon. (16) This was harder than it sounds because raccoons are very tricky and quick.

(17) The ending, when Billy saw a red fern growing where his two dogs were buried, was sad and happy at the same time. (18) I could definitely feel how much he had loved his dogs.
