Storm Watches and Warnings The National Weather Service is the US
government agency that warns the public about
severe weather conditions, including both
hurricanes and tornadoes. How meteorologists
warn the public depends upon the type of storm.
When a hurricane is heading toward land,
meteorologists issue hurricane watches and
warnings. A watch means hurricane conditions
are possible within 36 hours, while a warning
means hurricane conditions are expected within
24 hours. If the hurricane is mild, officials ask
people living very close to the water or in
mobile homes to evacuate. However, if a
stronger hurricane is in the forecast, officials
order a much larger evacuation
Like hurricanes, tornadoes can generate
watches and warnings Unlike hurricanes,
tornadoes form quickly and with much less
notice. When tornadoes seem possible, a watch
is issued, and people need to prepare to seek
shelter. But when a tornado is spotted touching
down, a warning is issued, and people must
seek shelter immediately.
