Many women in Esperanza's family who've come before her, including her grandmother, "sit their sadness on an elbow" as they stare out the window. What does this mean?
They are have painful elbows from all the vacuuming and cleaning they are doing to take care of
their homes.
These women rest all of their sadness on their elbow, literally and figuratively, as it holds them
up. They stare out the window wondering what their life could've been had they not gotten
married.
They are planning their revenge against the men in their lives that took them from their parents.
O They are contemplating what to do when the last of their children moves out, when they can go
back to school, and finally start their own businesses.
