Meredith tucked her pencil behind her ear and leaned forward to scrutinize the iris. Its unruly petals seemed defiant, almost mocking her effort to sketch them. To her eyes, the flower resembled a random mound of violet-colored whipping cream. But she methodically stared at its parts, one by one, from the green stem up through the ornate petals.
