What commentary does London offer about the “Wild”?
London suggests that the Wild is something to be respected because it is extremely powerful.
London makes this “power” clear through the way the three humans are treated by the “Wild.” First, the “Wild” “laughs” at the men on their journey.
This response from the “Wild” suggests that the “Wild” does not take the men or their quest seriously, and knows, through an “incommunicable wisdom,”
that the “Wild” is more powerful than the men. Additionally, London suggests that the “Wild” is so powerful, it is capable of “crushing” men and “beating down” any human.
The Wild is so much stronger than man that it not only physically destroys humans, like the man who has died, but can impact them psychologically, like the fear that was instilled in the two travelers as the silence of the “Wild” “crushed” and terrified them.
London is suggesting that the Wild is something to be feared and respected because it is extremely powerful, and makes this commentary clear through the way the three men interact with the “Wild” on their journey.
