What do we mean when we say that "character is plot"? How does Kafka use this strategy in The Metamorphosis?

"Character is plot" means the problem that needs to be solved in the story is something happening to the protagonist himself/herself. Frank Kafka uses this strategy by turning his protagonist, Gregor Samsa, into a beetle, which prevents him from going to work as he is the sole breadwinner for his family.
