French people distinguish between a best friend and a friend by how they interact with eachother. If it's someone they talk to every day and are very close with, then they are best friends or meilleure amie. If they hang out but aren't ver close to, they are copine. But if its someone youve talked with once or twice and know them but don't really talk at all, they're known as   connaissance.

For Americans tho, they call everyone friends even if they've only said hi to eachother once. And call bestfriend the people they are most comfortable with.
