Part 4: Cross-Sections Geologists often draw cross-sections (two-dimensional views exposed by cutting through an object with an imaginary plane) in order to illustrate and interpret the subsurface structure of a series of rocks based on the information available to them from the surface. Let’s draw a cross-section for the block below given the gray plane that intersects the block. For these types of questions, imagine cutting the blocks along the gray planes and removing the part of the block in front of the plane. For each block, you’d draw what the exposed face would look like in the empty square next to it. Make sense? Now that you’ve got an example, try drawing cross-sections for the following. Then, describe the appearance of the cross-sectional view using one of the following structural terms: horizontal strata, inclined strata, anticline, syncline, plunging syncline, plunging anticline, normal fault, reverse fault, or strike-slip fault.
