Why did the british suffer heavy casualties at the battle of bunker hill

The British suffered heavy casualties at Bunker Hill Battle because they attacked frontally the well defended American front line. Although the final outcome of the Battle was a victory for the British, they suffered  disproportionated losses, amounting to over a thousand men.
