During the Sand Creek Massacre  (1864) more than 150 Cheyenne men, women, and children were killed by the Colorado militia. While at the battle at Wounded Knee (1890) U.S. soldiers slaughtered thousands of unarmed native Americans including women and children. The Wounded Knee represented the end of any armed resistance on the part of the Native American. In 1887, under the Dawes Act, Native Americans were assigned poor lands. What is worse, the concept of Americanization led to the Indian culture destruction.
