The fight in North Africa began with the occupation of Italian Fort Capuzzo by British forces in June 1940. This was followed by an Italian offensive and a British counter-offensive. When the Italians suffered terrible defeats, the German Afrika Korps (sent by Field Marshal Erwin Rommel) came to their aid. After a series of tug-of-war battles for control of Libya and parts of Egypt, British forces (under General Bernard Montgomery) pushed the Axis forces towards Tunis.

In mid-1942, with the Allied landings of Operation Torch in northwest Africa (commanded by General Dwight Eisenhower), and after some fighting against the forces of Vichy France (which later joined the Allies), the Commonwealth and American forces led the Axis forces north of Tunis in a pincer movement, where they were forced to surrender.
