In 1966, the schools of Beijing became sites of chaos and
violence as students turned on their teachers, publicly
humiliating, beating, and even killing many of them. The
beatings were typically performed in public by a group of

and encouraging the violence. Bian Zhongyun, a vice
principal at a middle school, was the first victim of the
1966 uprising. Along with a group of other educators,
Bian was beaten with spiked clubs and scalded with
boiling water. After losing consciousness, her body was
dumped into a garbage cart. Hours later at a nearby
hospital, she was pronounced dead.
