1. Turn off the faucet. People often leave the faucet running when they brush their teeth, wash their face, and wash dishes. If they turn off the faucet when they don’t need it, they will conserve water.

2. Install low-flow products. Of all the appliances and products in a home, toilets use the most water. Some Texas cities are giving residents free low-flow (WaterSense) toilets to install in their home. These toilets use much less water than conventional toilets. The state is also encouraging use of low-flow faucets and showerheads.

3. Buy energy-efficient appliances. Buy dishwashers and clothes washers that are labeled Energy Star. These appliances use much less water than conventional ones.

4. Take showers. Filling up a bathtub takes much more water than taking a shower. Consider taking a shower instead of a bath.

5. Fix leaks. Many people have leaks in their water pipes, both inside and outside their home. If they inspected their pipes and found and fixed leaks, they could save many gallons of water.

6. Use plants that need less water. On its website, the Environmental Protection Agency lists for each state varieties of plants that need little water and are drought-resistant. Plant these varieties in your garden instead of plants that need a lot of water.

7. Water lawns and gardens in the morning. When people water their gardens and lawns before 10 a.m., the plants have time to absorb the water before the temperature rises. In the middle of the day, water evaporates quickly so you have to use more of it to keep your lawn and plants green.

8. Set your sprinkler on a low setting. Make sure that your sprinkler is set so the spray of water stays close to the ground. When sprinklers spray water high in the air, wind can blow the water away.

9. Use a rainwater barrel. People can use a rainwater barrel in their yard. These barrels collect rain as it falls. Then people can use it to water their lawns and gardens.

10. Honor water-use restrictions. Many areas have rules about when people can use irrigation or sprinkler systems. When people follow these rules, they help conserve water.
