Baron de Montesquieu was a French political philosopher, remembered for coming up with the idea of ​​the separation of powers, in which many democratic governments are based on nowadays.  He exposed the idea in the treatise on political theory that he wrote: The Spirit of the Laws (1748).

In the treatise, the philosopher describes three types of government: democratic, republican, monarchical and despotic; and he supported the separation of powers into three branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. All of which should rule under the law and must check each other’s power in order to prevent corruption or abuses of power.
