When the prohibition set to ban all alcoholic beverages it caused people to seek new ways to get what they had wanted the same way a drug addict looks for a way to get a fix. before long people created speakeasies to sell and distribute alcohol to others without the police knowing. A lot of police actually participated in said activities and such. the prohibition ended in 1933 due to over half the population wanting the continue drinking openly without having to hide somewhere. the prohibition also helped major crime leaders develop such as Al Capone Causing them to be more powerful for selling alcohol and drugs.
