Why would a country favor communism over capitalism?

Communism includes the equal distribution of wealth. Capitalism emphasizes free trade where the government doesn’t have that much of an ability to control the wealth. So in certain countries, especially poor ones, people prefer the equal distribution of wealth (no poor, no rich) over some rich and majority poor.
