Dr. Jeffery Wigand got into the tobacco industry in order to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco from within the industry.

In his position as the Vice president of Research and Development at Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation, he tried to make safer cigarettes but soon realized that the company did not care about safer cigarettes as they simply wanted to prevent further liability.

When Dr. Wigand recommended that they remove a harmful substance they dismissed his recommendation because they believes that sales would drop if they removed it.
