Each scenario represents one of the following philosophers: Aristotle, Kant, or Mill. You have three tasks. First, identify the type of moral reasoning being used. (For example, "This scenario represents the moral reasoning of Kant.")

Second, explain your answer by succinctly stating the relevant element(s) of the moral view in question, and then applying it to the specific scenario. Each of your responses should be 150-200 words, and must include at least one (1) direct quote from the text. Include a word count for each response.

Third, based on a current international news story that we have not discussed in this course, construct your own scenario that we could take up together in class. Devise the scenario in such a way that we can guess the moral theory influencing the decision being made. This will require you to be creative, and come up with a scenario involving an actual or imaginary person (make sure to give them a name). Be sure to indicate to me which moral theory you are describing, just in case I "don't get it." These scenarios may be incorporated into an assignment toward the end of the semester. Look for stories online in newspapers. (The 'international' or 'global' section of major news organizations such as the Wall Street Journal, the Guardian, the New York Times, FOX News, the Washington Post, the BBC, or National Public Radio are all good places to look for news stories from around the world.)

Scenarios

1. Although Fred was tempted to cheat on his ethics exam, he resisted the temptation to do so. He was able to resist this temptation by recognizing that if every student cheated it would undermine the validity of the educational system as a whole, thereby, making a mockery of his goal of attaining a degree.

2. Much to Sam's dismay, the money he had donated to his favorite charity had not been used by the organization to help orphans as he thought, but rather to buy a new resort home for the president of the charity. Despite this, Sam knew his action was morally worthy since his intent had been good.

3. Bubba realized that the comments he made to his mother were wrong since it created a great amount of unhappiness in him and his mother.

4. Sarah-Sue regretted her participation in the charity walk because, despite her best intentions, the walk failed to generate more money than it had spent. Also, numerous participants were injured during the walk, further adding to the overall failure of the event.

5. While working at the car detailing business, Fred encountered a customer who was irate because of a scratch on his new BMW. After the encounter with the customer, Fred was confident that his response was appropriate because it was the proper balance between being too upset and not being upset enough.
