john brown was arrested and sentenced to hang because of the Crime of 'Treason'.
Back then, he was accused to supply the slaves with weapon and foods to aid them in creating revolution. The  Commonwealth of Virginia did not take this kindly and decided to eliminate John Brown. After his death, John Brown became a martyr that inspired many people who are dedicated to end the slavery.
