It was a peace treaty that brought the first opium war to end which was going on between the United Kingdom and China between the period of 1839 to 1842. When the Chinese military was defeated, the British warships headed to attack Nanjing. It was then British and Chinese officials who did negotiations and then this treaty came into force. The terms of this treaty consisted of Foreign trade, Demobilization as well as the cession of Hong Kong. But this treaty also left many unsettled issues such as issues related to opium traffic which was in favor of the British Empire. It was after the second opium war when China faced another defeat that Opium traffic was legalized in the treaty of Tianjin.  

If we look at this treaty from the perspective of China, then they had to suffer a lot because of the fixed trade tariff which was imposed on them by the Europeans as one of the most important purposes of this treaty was to change the model of foreign trade which was imposed on China by the canton system.
