During his campaign, Polk openly advocated for the annexation of Texas, which had been independent of Mexico since 1836, and he laid claim to the whole Oregon territory, occupied by England, that extended as far north as latitude 54°40′ with the campaign slogan “Fifty-four forty or fight.”

His ideas and public support led him to serve as the 11th U.S. President from 1845 to 1849. During his term, he certainly contributed to American westward expansion: he annexed Texas, acquired California and much of the present-day Southwest after winning the Mexica-American War (1846-48) and settled the boundary dispute with the British, among others.
