You are called to investigate a local department's fire truck crash. You are very familiar with the area, in fact you are often called to the area multiple times a day to investigate crashes. Hopefully DOT will fix that intersection! Upon arriving at the scene you are grateful that no one was hurt in this crash, especially since the officer involved has been with the department a while and you have worked with her on multiple scenes. It appears that the fire truck was traveling north through the four way stop, when it was hit on the left side smack in the middle of the driver's door. The other vehicle involved has the damage to the front of the vehicle and it is apparent that it was traveling east on the cross street. The driver said they didn't even see the fire truck, came to a stop and then started through the intersection and only at the last second saw the flash of the lights right in front of him. The firefighter stated that she was responding to a medical call that was still about five miles away, and had her emergency lights on before and as she entered the intersection. She stated that she had her siren on but a block before switched to the air horn giving it four good long blasts prior to entering the intersection, and had not turned the siren back on after the air horn. She stated that she slowed as she entered the intersection but didn't stop and she thought the other vehicle was going to stop but then felt the impact from the left. From your training you see that the impact, though severe, wasn't high speed. The emergency lights were still activated on the fire truck and the in-squad camera showed exactly the events as described. The sound box was still indicating air horn and the Sgt. on scene for the department stated that she was indeed responding to an emergency call."
