squirtle, charmander, and bulbasaur are going to throw pikachu a surprise birthday party but they need to go shopping to get the supplies. before going to the store, each pokemon has a job: squirtle is in charge of buying soda, charmander is going to get the chips, and bulbasaur is buying brownies. they only have $40 to spend.

once they get to the store, the trio split up to find their items. after a few minutes, they meet at the self-checkout lane. oh no! the registers are all down. they have to find their total using nothing more than paper, a pencil, and a calculator.

in total, they have x bottles of soda, y bags of chips, and z boxes of brownies. each bottle of soda is $1.50, each bag of chips is $2, and each box of brownies is $3.25. there is no tax on food purchases.

problem (a): write an algebraic equation to determine the total cost, c, of their items [see hint for ! ]

problem (b): do squirtle, charmander, and bulbasaur have enough money to buy 10 bottles of soda, 7 bags of chips, and 5 boxes of brownies? show steps!

problem (c): open-ended.

if they do have enough
how much money do they have left to spend?
they want to spend as much money as possible. you decide if they should add on more soda, chips, or brownies, how many of each, and their new total.

if they do not have enough
how much more money do they need?
what items can they take off to get under the $40 limit? you decide if they should remove soda, chips, or brownies, how many of each, and their new total.

David estimated he had about 20 fish in his pond. a year later, there were about 1.5 times as many fish. the year after that, the number of fish increased by a factor of 1.5 again. the number of fish is modeled by f(x)=20(1.5)^x. create a question you could ask that could be answered only by graphing or using a logarithm.
