Andre bought a box containing x pens. He lost 4 of the pens from the box. He then bought 2 more boxes of pens. The 2 new boxes each contain x pens. Ida bought some of the same boxes of pens that Andre bought. She also had some other pens. To show the total number of pens she has, Ida wrote the expression 4x + 6.Ida puts half of her pens in her school locker. She puts the other half in her desk at home. Andre notices that Ida could have separated all her pens by putting an equal number in 3 places even though the coefficient of 4x is not divisible by 3. A. Write an expression in terms of x to show how many pens Andre has now. B. Explain what each term in Ida’s expression represents. C. Write an expression that shows how many pens Ida puts in each place. D. Explain what must be true about the number of pens in each box. Then, give one possible number of pens in each box and show that Andre’s observation is true.
