There are a few different kinds of lines we see on the road while driving.

A solid yellow line is used for two-way traffic (cars are moving in both directions). It marks the center of the road. There is no passing when a solid yellow line is on your side of the road.

Double solid yellow lines are used in the center of two-way traffic. Two solid yellow lines mean you cannot pass and you cannot drive on the left of these lines.

A broken white line is used to separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction. You may change lanes across a broken white line.

When a solid and a broken yellow line are together in the middle of the road, you may pass only if you are on the same side as the broken yellow line.

Passing is permitted only over broken white lines or broken yellow lines. White lines are used when traveling in the same direction as other cars while yellow lines are used when traveling in opposite directions. Broken yellow lines indicate passing is allowed if there are no oncoming cars, as long as the broken lines are on your side of the road.
