Replacing an arbitrary ‘black box’ ray matrix with a single lens. an optical black box has various optical elements inside it, producing a given real abcd matrix from its input plane to its output plane. we want to replace this black box with a box of physical length l, containing only a single lens of focal length f. can this be done? why? and if so, what total length l, focal length f, and lens location x (within l) will be required?

Two resistors r1 and r2 may be connected either in series or parallel across an ideal battery with emf ε. we desire the rate of energy dissipation of the parallel combination to be 8.75 times that of the series combination. if r1 = 105 ω, what are the (a) smaller and (b) larger of the two values of r2 that result in that dissipation rate?

To practice problem-solving strategy 10.1 for energy conservation problems. a sled is being held at rest on a slope that makes an angle θ with the horizontal. after the sled is released, it slides a distance d1 down the slope and then covers the distance d2 along the horizontal terrain before stopping. find the coefficient of kinetic friction μk between the sled and the ground, assuming that it is constant throughout the trip.

Which statements identify what astronomers currently know and think will happen with our universe? check all that apply. the big bang produced dark energy, which accounts for some of the energy needed to expand the universe. the vastness of space may contain a type of matter known as "dark matter." the universe is currently shrinking at a rapid rate. the universe is currently expanding at an accelerating rate. the big bang theory explains all the energy and matter discovered by scientists.
