A sprinter is moving to the right and only one foot is touching the ground. The sprinter’s foot pushes back on the ground horizontally with a force of 300N and down vertically with a force of 750N. The mass of the sprinter is 50 kg. We will define upward vertical as positive and rightward horizontal as positive.

a) Draw a free body diagram of the sprinter showing all external forces acting on the sprinter.

b) What is the resultant of the force that the ground applies to the sprinters foot? Hint: it is equal and opposite to the force that the foot applies to the ground.

c) What are the net horizontal and vertical forces acting on the sprinter?

d) If the mass of the sprinter is 50 kg, what are the net horizontal and vertical accelerations of the sprinter’s center of gravity?
