Positive reinforcement is considered the most powerful because people respond best to it. Positive reinforcement strengthens or increases a behavior due to the addition of a reward. Researchers believe this may be because it is easier to process the addition of a positive response or reward for a given behavior (positive reinforcement) than the removal of an unwanted response for the same behavior (negative reinforcement).  The gold star as a reward is much more effective than punishing a child who repeatedly runs ahead or does not line up for recess.
