Friction Lab Directions: Complete the lab below using the labquest pro and force sensor.

Max Force: N:
6.51. 3.1
5.10. 2.8
5.90. 2.98

Procedure:
1. Using a scale, measure the mass of both wood blocks together in kilograms. Record here:
2. Plug in and turn on the lab quest pro. Hook up the force sensor to the lab quest pro. Make sure you are using
the bumper and not the hook. Then using the stylus, click on Sensors at the top and zero out the force sensor
and reverse the direction so you get a positive force reading when you push on an object.
3. Place 2 pieces of wood on the lab table and position the force sensor besides the wood.
4. Push play on the lab quest pro to start collecting data.
5. Push the wood lightly and then gradually harder and harder until it starts to move. Once moving, push the wood
at a constant velocity.

Questions for the lab:
5. From the data that you collected determine the following and show all work.
a. What is the force of gravity acting on the wood?
b. What is the normal force?
c. What is the maximum force of static friction from your data?
d. What is the force of kinetic friction from your data?
e. Using your data, calculate the coefficient of kinetic friction between the wood block and the table.
f. Using your data, calculate the coefficient of static friction between the wood block and the table.

Ablock of mass m = 2.5 kg is attached to a spring with spring constant k = 710 n/m. it is initially at rest on an inclined plane that is at an angle of θ = 23° with respect to the horizontal, and the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is μk = 0.19. in the initial position, where the spring is compressed by a distance of d = 0.16 m, the mass is at its lowest position and the spring is compressed the maximum amount. take the initial gravitational energy of the block as zero. a) what is the block's initial mechanical energy? b) if the spring pushes the block up the incline, what distance, l, in meters will the block travel before coming to rest? the spring remains attached to both the block and the fixed wall throughout its motion.
